www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 30, 2007 - 35 Halton Food for Thought marks tenth anniversary s we approach the holiday season, we are all aware that not every child in Oakville or in Halton has what they need. But can you imagine that the need is so great that the Halton Food for Thought organization feeds a nutritious breakfast or snack to more than 17,000 Halton children every week? Halton Food for Thought began as a community initiative and is now in its tenth year. Children were coming to school hungry and it was obvious that they could not learn until that simple basic need for nutritious food was met. Gayle Cruikshank, Executive Director of Halton Food for Thought, said the program began as a breakfast program, but has since expanded to include much more. "We're now serving snacks to at-risk high school students, and A we have launched a new `basket' program initiative in some highneed schools." Cruikshank explained that the basket program provides just that a basket of healthy, nonperishable food items in every single classroom in four Halton schools. "I would like to know that there is no child in Halton who is going hungry," said Cruikshank. The YMCA of Oakville has acted as a host agency for Food for Thought. This year, Food for Thought was incorporated and held its first Annual General Meeting, where it presented a `community award' to the Y. "The YMCA of Oakville has gone over and above to support our agency and we want to thank them for helping us to make our wishes and dreams come true," said Cruikshank. Lorraine Pettinato, Manager of Children's Services at the Oakville Y has been on the board of Food for Thought for many years, and was thrilled to receive the award for the Y. "With Gayle's determination I know that she will meet the goal to feed every child. We just don't realize how many people we have who are living in poverty here in Halton." Halton Food for Thought was part of a Moments & Memories Gala on Nov. 10. The evening was a success with more than 300 guests. The title sponsor, Bio Sculpture Canada Inc., has been in business for 10 years in Canada and wanted to give something back to the community, so all proceeds from the evening were given to Food for Thought. Congratulations to Cruikshank and her volunteer team, which gave more than 138,000 hours to the Food for Thought effort and served more than 950,000 meals during the 2006/2007 school year. The Y has been proud to be part of this worthwhile organization! -- Submitted by the Oakville YMCA. cancun/mayan H10 Hacienda Maya punta cana Ocean Sands Golf puerto plata Holiday Village Golden jamaica Royal Decameron $ 487 Taxes $276 $ 500 Taxes $318 $ 307 905 615 Taxes $318 $ 758 667 Taxes $266 1 week - All inclusive December 8/nol 1 week - All inclusive December 10/sig 1 week - All inclusive December 8/sig 1 week - All inclusive January 5, 12/ath jamaica Holiday Inn Sunspree santiago de cuba Club Amigo Carisol los cabos Presidente Inter-con varadero Sirenis la Salina $ 597 597 Taxes $266 $ 289 575 Taxes $205 $ Taxes $276 $ Taxes $209 1 week - All inclusive December 8/sq 1 week - All inclusive December 4/hola 1 week - All inclusive Jan 8, 10, 15, 17/sq 1 week - All inclusive January 5/sq cayo largo Sol Pelicano manzanillo de cuba Marea del Portillo cayo coco Blau Colonial cancun/mayan Mayan Promo Reading | Writing | Math | Spelling | Grammar | French | Study Skills $ Taxes $209 $ Taxes $210 $ Taxes $209 $ 798 Taxes $276 1 week - All inclusive January 4, 11/nol 1 week - All inclusive December 20/sw 1 week - All inclusive January 5, 12/sq 1 week - All inclusive Jan 6, 13, 20, 27/sig CARRIERS WANTED Little Readers Registrtion NOW OPEN The Oakville Beaver The Oakville Beaver is looking for newspaper carriers in your neighbour hood!
