www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 30, 2007 - 39 www.oakvillebeaver.com Presents The award-winning musical 110 in the Shade Based on the play The Rainmaker By Richard Nash Music by Harvey Schmidt DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Lyrics by Tom Jones Book by Richard Nash STEAMY SHOW: Doug Price, as the con man Starbuck, and Leah Cogan, as Lizzie, in a scene from Theatre Sheridan's production of 110 in the Shade. Price sizzles as Starbuck in Sheridan's 110 in the Shade By Mark Andrew Lawrence SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER NOVEMBER 27 DECEMBER 8, 2007 Call the Box Office Today! 905-815-4049 From the still, steamy heat of the opening number through to the rain-soaked finale, 110 in the Shade has a score that show buffs cherish. The songs by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones are well crafted and rich in character detail. Although the book is a little uneven, it tells a touching story and the show is given solid production at Theatre Sheridan directed by Greg Peterson with the assistance of Patricia Lackey. The original Broadway run was curtailed when the show's leading lady broke her ankle in an onstage accident and missed four months of performances. Hopefully that same fate won't befall either of the two ladies sharing the title role here. Caitlin Goguen played Lizzie on opening night, alternating in the lead with Leah Cogan. Goguen offers a beautifully shaded performance displaying the lonesome Lizzie's many sides: wistful, childish, and anguished, before blossoming into a strong confident woman being courted by both a rainmaker and a sheriff. Caleb Cosman plays Sheriff File, who is supposed to be a repressed angry loner, yet in his early scenes appears too open and cheerful. He does sing beautifully though and his scenes with Lizzie were particularly heartfelt. The musical is based on the play The Rainmaker and at times a little too much of the original text dominates the scene, but it provides a solid foundation and some vivid characters. Plan to attend!
