With three children in tow Aoki and his wife came to Canada in 1986, on the invite of the Oakville mayor of the day, Harry Barrett (1973-1985). The two men met at a reception in Tokyo when Barrett was part of an entourage visiting the town's twin city of Neyagawa, Japan. In short measure the Aoki family immediately settled in to town life. By January of 1987 the Aoki's fourth child was born at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. In May they bought the building on Church and Navy Streets and by October Mye Japanese Restaurant was open. It has become a well-loved local landmark. Last month the Aokis celebrated 20 years in business, which is a tall order in the restaurant world. "It wasn't easy to start a business out of nothing, in a new country...we had taken on a little too much," said Aoki, "but it was all worth it and we're happy we did." After 20 years sales and staff have tripled and continue to rise. "Oakville has been good to us," said Aoki. "We're supported by a lot of good customers who love Japanese food," he added. The simple, elegant décor in the 100-seat restaurant is a tasteful backdrop to the authentic Japanese food served. JAPANESE CUISINE The restaurant that began as Oakville's first introduction to Japanese fare in 1987 has earned accolades from aficionados, fans and gastronomic neophytes. Sushi pioneer Wayne MacAlpine considers Mye the best Japanese restaurant in the country. That's because Aoki puts only the freshest ingredients on diners' plates and artfully sculpts it in the only way Aoki knows how, masterfully. With such success Aoki is doing as the name of his restaurant says Mye is a Japanese word for dancing. FOOT PAIN? Just What The Doctor Ordered!
