SILVER STICK WINNERS: The Oakville minor peewee AA Rangers were a happy bunch after winning the Silver Stick regional hockey tournament last weekend in Whitby. Oakville went 4-0-2 in its six games, allowing only seven goals, and qualified for the Silver Stick final tournament. Minor peewees win Silver Stick regional Exceptional defense and balanced offense enabled the Oakville minor peewee AA Rangers to win the championship at last weekend's Silver Stick regional tournament in Whitby, qualifying the team for the Silver Stick final competition. The Rangers allowed only seven goals in their six games, posting a 40-2 mark. Oakville earned tournament gold with a 4-1 win over the Barrie Junior Colts, yielding the first marker of the game before responding with four consecutive goals of its own. Douglas Bertrand, Ryan Garvey, Theo Lewis and Joel Matson scored for the Rangers in the decisive victory. Bertrand finished the tournament with four goals and an assist, and earned tournament MVP honours. Ironically, Oakville's margin of victory in the championship game was far greater than any advantage it enjoyed in its other five contests. The Rangers scored three third-period goals to nip Scarborough 3-2 in their first contest, with Lewis providing the winner; played Aurora to a 1-1 draw; and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie Clarington 2-2, finishing round-robin play with a 1-0-2 record. In the quarter-finals, Bertrand was the overtime hero, breaking a scoreless deadlock with 1:42 to go in the extra frame. Patrick Shea, who had an 0.67 goals-against average in the tournament, earned the shutout. Two hours later, the Rangers were victimized by a bad bounce around their net and surrendered the opening goal against the Whitby Wildcats. However, Lewis scored a powerplay goal to tie the game and then Garvey converted a rebound chance to give Oakville a 2-1 win over the Wildcats, who are 13-1 in Lakeshore League play. Lucas Marek's play was another highlight of the tournament for the Rangers, as the goaltender had a 1.67 goals-against average in split time with Shea. Other members of the team are Connor Chambers, Christian Hayes, Zach Moll, Matt Norris, Logan Crozier, Chris Dumont, Tyler Hipple, Nicholas Caissie, Gordon Schneider, Jake Smyth and Callum Fryer. Dave Crozier, Dan Dumont and Kevin Gordon coach the team, which will play in the Silver Sticks final tournament Jan. 17-20 in Newmarket against other regional winners. Charlie Hayes manages the team and Ray Caissie is the trainer. ATTENTION COACHES!
