SECOND THAT: The Oakville minor atom A Rangers won silver at a tournament in Rochester recently. Minor atoms make major adjustments The Oakville minor atom A Rangers were forced to make a few adjustments when they competed in a hockey tournament in Rochester recently, but they were still able to skate away with silver. The Rangers were facing teams with players a year older than them as well as playing under American rules, which do not allow for body contact at that age or delayed offsides. Oakville defeated teams from Buffalo, Rochester and Perinton (N.Y.) by a combined score of 21-5, but dropped two games to a New Jersey squad, both by 53 scores. Craig McCormick paced the team in scoring at the tournament, collecting seven points. Michael Sweeney and Bradley Byers both notched five. Other members of the team are Andrew Ciuffreda, Caleb Cutcliffe, Alex Filippini, Sean Garvey, Benjamin Hamburg, Christopher Howarth, Kyle Kolwich, Brian McGinnis, Colin McLeod, Michael Pare, Graham Parker, Elric Schreinert, Lucas VasilarosWilson and Jacob Zedor. Correction Incorrect information was printed with a girls' high school hockey photo that appeared in the Friday, Nov. 23 edition of The Oakville Beaver. Daniella Maton and Ally Williams were the goal-scorers for Abbey Park in the Eagles' 4-2 loss to the T.A. Blakelock Tigers. Brittany Aldworth was the winning goaltender for Blakelock. The names of the scorers were erroneously provided to the Beaver. The Beaver regrets the errors and any inconvenience they may have caused. Tigers facing challenges of Tier 1 Continued from page 32 Trinity boasts a nice mix of size and athleticism, led by returnees Jahmal McQueen and Danny Foster-Roman. As they showed in Tuesday's season-opening 7462 loss at Nelson, however, the Titans will need their other three starters to quickly adjust to their new roles. McQueen and Foster-Roman combined to score 34 points in the loss to Nelson, which began the game with a 15-1 run and held off the Titans in the second half. "It looked like Nelson was ready to play us a lot more than we were ready to play them," said Titans coach Vic Juzenas. Pat Moskal, Paul Dawkins and Dave Ozimec round out the Trinity starting five. Jordan Catterall and Tim Doyley are coming off the bench to start the season, and both provided some scoring punch against the Lords. Trinity bounced back in its second game of the season Wednesday, as Moskal scored 16 points in a 96-39 victory over T.A. Blakelock. T.A. Blakelock The T.A. Blakelock Tigers aren't backing down from a challenge. A year after going winless in regular-season play, the Tigers are competing in Tier 1 this season, going up against heavyweights like Holy Trinity, St. Thomas Aquinas, Nelson and Notre Dame. Blakelock coach Michael Pearson said the decision to play in the tougher loop was one with the future in mind. "We want to develop these guys and expose them to increased competition," he said. "It will be a test for these guys and their character. We will have to play team basketball to overcome that season last year. We have great players, but it will be a team effort to make an impact in this division." Blakelock's key players will likely be Evan St. Hilaire, who will captain the team and play power forward; Josh Plante, a provincial-caliber point guard; and Ben Turnbull, who will start and see time at guard as well. "They're confident," Pearson said of his players. "Evan's a great leader. He's assessed the schedule and is predicting a playoff spot, and I agree with that." The Tigers have dropped their first two games, losing 55-36 Tuesday to the Lester B. Pearson Patriots and 96-39 Wednesday to Holy Trinity. St. Hilaire and Plante were Blakelock's top scorers against the Patriots, each with eight points. St. Hilaire netted 14 against Trinity. Abbey Park Abbey Park Eagles co-coach Dana Stubbert likes his team's chances this year, especially after the Eagles nearly knocked off Aquinas in their season opener Wednesday. Abbey Park led the Raiders by 10 at halftime, but foul trouble proved costly in the late going and the Eagles fell 59-54. Still, it was a promising start, Stubbert said. "At the very least, we should be high middle of the pack, and I'm being conservative there," he said. Pete Devooght and Pat Donnelly are likely to be the Eagles' main scorers this year, as they were against Aquinas. Greg Stewart and Mike Sebben are also expected to be key contributors.
