For the Grade 11 student, she moved to Oakville recently to live with her aunt and uncle. The barriers program has helped her to adjust. "Without it, it would just be harder for me. I grew up in a very poor place and I moved to Oakville a couple years ago. This is a very rich place," she said. This student is a "student leader at the school," Miller says, and a prime example of what he stresses. "The kids this (program) is helping, are kids that are really trying hard to be successful, and I think the money from the program is helping with that," Miller said. She added, "This really helped a lot. I could always go get food, go grocery shopping, have bus tickets. I knew if I needed anything, I could just go and ask for it and it wouldn't be an issue."
