Blatchford has been a highprofile Canadian journalist for more than 25 years, with "Founder's Special" p Loaded $ 1 Large 5-topping Pizza only 1395 columns covering sports, lifestyle, current affairs and crime. She started working for The Globe and Mail in 1972 and has since held positions with the Toronto Star, the Toronto Sun and the National Post. She returned to The Globe and Mail in 2002. According to a CFUW news release, Blatchford was the winner of the 1999 National Newspaper Award for column writing for her coverage of the Alison Parrott murder trail. Judges said all three of Blatchford's columns were superbly written and riveting in their depth and detail. Over her career, Blatchford has been praised for "Her vivid prose, her unmistakable voice, her ability to connect emotionally with her subjects and readers, her hard-won and hard-nosed skills as a reporter," said the release. But with her many more recent reports from Afghanistan, and in dozens of Until January 13, 2008 220 North Service Road (905) 845-1717 interviews with the returned members of the 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and others back home, she found the subject she was born to tackle. Her reporting of the conflict and her deeply empathetic observations of the men and women who wear the maple leaf are words for the ages, fit to stand alongside the nation's best writing on war. This past September, Blatchford received the 2007 Ross Munro Media Award, which is sponsored by the Conference of Defence Associations (CDA), in concert with the Canadian Defence & Foreign Affairs Institute (CDFAI). The award was initiated in 2002 to recognize Canadian journalists who have made a significant and extraordinary contribution to increasing public understanding of Canadian defence and security issues. Blatchford's candidacy is based on her journalistic writings and her recent book, Fifteen Days: Stories of Bravery, Friendship, Life and Death From Inside the New Canadian Army. Fifteen Days draws on insights gained during Blatchford's three trips to Afghanistan in 2006, and draws on hundreds of hours of interviews with the servicemen and -women, as well as with their commanders and family members. It has been called "a detailed, complex and deeply affecting picture of military life in the twenty-first century." Blatchford won the respect and trust of the soldiers, who share breathtakingly honest accounts of their desire to serve, their willingness to confront fear and danger in the battlefield, their loyalty towards each other and the heartbreak occasioned by the loss of one of their own, said the release.
