The local conservation association is set to receive the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant over the next three years. The grant will be used to introduce two new tree programs that will complement Oakvillegreen's existing tree programs. One of these is the Heritage Seed Collection Program. It will see citizens trained as certified seed collectors who will collect seed from genetically superior local native trees. Working with the Town of Oakville and other community partners, the seed will be propagated and the saplings planted around the community. This program will help to ensure the genetic diversity of the town's urban forest. The Foster Tree Parent Program will recruit Oakville citizens who are willing to grow and care for a quantity of saplings on their property until they are ready to be planted through Ground Breakers events or other community plantings. In addition to protecting the genetic diversity of local trees, the program is designed to superior, local native trees for private and community tree plantings at low to lectors and institutions like the University of Guelph that is engaged in a program to develop disease resistant elms. The grant will also allow Oakvillegreen to hire a Public Outreach Coordinator to foster community partnerships and supervise the tree programs.
