24 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 7, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com The Tree the winner in Capture Oakville contest In a photography competition presented by the Oakville Camera Club (OCC), the big winner was Roman Chlebowicz. He took home the grand prize of a Canon 30D for his black and white photo, The Tree. "Capture Oakville 150 was such a great success," said OCC president Kieley Hickey, who added it marked the first annual competition for the Oakville Camera Club and was open to people of all skill levels. Judges Reg Vertolli of The Oakville Beaver and James Van Hees of Jaymz Fotographie were impressed with what they saw at the competition. "There was great potential in what we saw and we are excited to see what is submitted next year," said Van Hees. The OCC grew to 65 members after its move to the main branch of the Oakville Public Library back in January. Meeting twice a month during the fall, winter, spring and once a month in the summer, the OCC focuses on seminars, monthly assignments with peer led critiques, and the member of the month feature. The first meeting of 2008 will take place Thursday, Jan. 10, where Kieley will make a presentation on the wedding photography business. In the new year, the OCC will have a new set of assignments, including portraits, winter, close ups, architecture and water. Prints for each assignment are handed in mounted, and at the following meeting, members contribute to a peer critique where everyone offers insight on what makes the print good and where it can improve. Also on critique night, the OCC Member of the Month is featured where he or she speaks to the club about what inspires them as they highlight their portfolio with a slide show. "The Oakville Camera Club is promoting photography in Oakville," says Kieley. "We have a strong educational and social component to our meetings and we encourage member participation." Annual memberships for the OCC cost $60 per year with forms available online at oakvillecameraclub.com. The group's next meeting is Wednesday, Dec. 12 at the main branch of the Oakville Public Library.
