Vol. 46 No. 148 Residents pleas fail Councillors hold noses and approve compromise with Maurice-Gardens developer By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If we don't make this deal it will be worse. This was the argument that Town councillors asked residents to keep in mind as they voted to endorse a deal reached with Maurice-Garden Developments Inc. that would allow three and four-storey townhouses and apartments on the one-hectare block of land bounded by Rebecca Street, Maurice Drive, Lakeshore Road West and Dorval Drive. The decision was one of necessity, councillors noted, as the issue was currently before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) at which the developer was requesting to build a six-storey development on Lakeshore. In the end, councillors chose not to risk the OMB outcome and compromised with the developer by changing the zoning in the Maurice/Garden Drive area to accommodate four-storey townhouses and apartments. "We kind of got roasted on this one," said Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck. "The planning consultant and our own planning staff had been called to testify on behalf of the developer. I refuse to mislead the public into thinking they had an opportunity to win at the OMB and I would not do away with the money it would take." The news was not taken well by local residents, who throughout the evening had approached the podium ADD Optimize Performance · Attention span is short · Difficulty organizing & completing work · also helpful for Asperger's Neurofeedback and learning strategies can provide a lasting improvement. Halton Regional Police allege the couple made "use of the documents" and refused to return them to the CAS despite several attempts on the organization's part. The man and woman, who cannot be named because they are CAS clients, are charged with theft and mischief. They are both 33 years old. The couple contacted The Oakville Beaver in October. They said the confidential CAS files were left clipped together on their kitchen table following an hour-long visit from a caseworker. The man told The Oakville Beaver these notes contained the "deepest and darkest secrets" of other families. The papers contained confidential and sensitive information about 22 Halton CAS client families. The CAS attempted to retrieve the documents, but the man and woman said they were going to hand them to a judge during a previously scheduled court case in October.
