www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 12, 2007 - 35 Gairloch takes on tables RevolutionMusic Profile drummer Continued from page 34 of, because everybody has sat around a table," said Fleming. "There's all kinds of things happening around the table." Photos submitted with a brief explanation in the children, teen or adult categories should be e-mailed to photos@oakvillegalleries.com. Participants can also drop off a disc at Gairloch Gardens with the title, `What do you bring to the table? A photo series with Oakville Galleries.' "The project truly came from a desire to connect with the Oakville community, to connect with the audiences," said Oakville Galleries' program manager, Catherine Sicot. "What we bring to the table was such an amazing opportunity, because food is important and central for everybody. Food is the perfect means to bring people to discover contemporary art." The local galleries hope the project casts light on various traditions in Oakville. "The heart of the project maybe is not asking people to go too far away from their daily lives," said Sicot. Of course, she's not sure what to expect. "I first thought, `Ok, it's going to be family photographs,'" she said. "Then I wondered it could be anything. That's part of the discovery, we have no idea what people are going to send." Oakville Galleries will be making an effort to reach out to different audiences and groups in Oakville schools, different cultural organizations and more to get the word out. "We want to try to invite people who are not only artists," said Sicot. As the photo series is running next year from Feb. 9June 6, Gairloch Gardens will be hosting What We Bring to the Table, inspired by a desire to incorporate Patrick Faigenbaum's photograph of the Pantijelew Family. The photo is "a very important part of Oakville Galleries' permanent collection," said Fleming. It features a family staring straight across a dinner table, blank-faced, into a camera. Other featured artists in the show are Laura Letinsky, Bettina Hoffmann and the Toronto and Vancouver-based group, Instant Coffee. The group re-created a kitchen nook belonging to one of its members in a piece called 1 Nook. "They duplicated it right down to the tee," Fleming said. "They discovered that for them, the nook was the art form, where they, as musicians and artists, would talk about their ideas." For the artists six of them cram into the nook, but it holds four comfortably the kitchen table and nook, which also holds a TV set, became an artistic meeting place. Hoffmann's La Ronde shows a very different picture of the importance of the table. It's a video submission of an unmoving group seated at a table. "There's a social tension around these people. There's this boundary there," said Fleming. "It's seems like the table is something that's very loaded." What we Bring to the Table includes a variety of takes on the importance of the table, and the curator says they're hoping to see even more from Oakville residents. "People tell stories around their tables, so that's the sort of thing we want to hear," said Fleming. "It'll be interesting to see what Oakvillians are willing to share."
