42 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Bronze for novice Venom Veteran fencer golden at North American Cup Hosting its first annual novice boys' basketball tournament last weekend at Oakville Trafalgar High School, the Oakville Venom went 3-3 in six games to earn bronze. After a 2-2 mark in round-robin play, the Venom fell 26-19 in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champion, Kitchener-Waterloo. Keshaun Saunders and Elijah Lostracco were the top scorers for Oakville, which rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to tie the game 18-18 before K-W pulled away in the late going. In the bronze-medal match, the Venom took control from the start and rolled to a 31-10 rout of Brantford. Also contributing to the third-place finish were Maxime Grincourt, Cullen Welsford, Jaiman Dhindsa, Diego Nunez, Chris Tani, Akaash Viswanathan, Matthew Manocchio, Jacob Cerny, J.B. Cabrera and Stefan Rajacic. The Canadian Fencing Academy's Jacek Baldowski won gold in veteran men's epee at last weekend's North American Cup in Richmond, Virginia. Kirsten Ball and Leah Fidanza also represented the club at the competition. Ball finished 34th in open women's epee, while Fidanza claimed 30th spot in veteran women's foil. Ball and Baldowski were recently recognized for their strong seasons, being invited to join the national high performance program that the Canadian Fencing Federation uses to determine Canada's international and Olympic teams. Kyle Foster, the Canadian Fencing Academy's president and director of operations, said, "We have 2 elite coaches who have worked with, and coached world champions. Our fencers, both competitive and recreational, are benefiting from the international experience these coaches bring to our club. I expect we will have more top-ranked fencers by season's end." Last month, Janet Jackowski, Ball, Baldowski and Fidanza competed at the senior national championships in Montreal. Ball was seventh in women's epee, with Jackowski placing 34th. Fidanza came 26th in women's foil and Baldowski was 31st in men's epee.
