www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 - 9 Cancer Society president arrested for hanging around too long By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Oakville unit was arrested Tuesday morning and the look on her face was priceless. Now, don't get the wrong idea. The `arrest' on Joan Gibb, which came as a complete surprise to her, marked the beginning of the local Cancer Society's Jail-N-Bail event. Set to take place on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at Oakville Place Mall, the event will see various members of the community including Gibb, MPP Kevin Flynn, Councillor Ralph Robinson and more jailed in a make-shift prison. To bail them out, or if people want to keep them behind bars longer, they'll have to pledge money to the Canadian Cancer Society. "I have a warrant for Joan Gibb's arrest," said a surprisingly straight-faced Constable Carla Draper, who interrupted a breakfast meeting with Gibb and a group of friends at the Fifties Diner Tuesday morning. "Joan Gibb, stand up and turn around." After the shock wore off, a grinning Gibb stood up and allowed the handcuffs to go on. Up until that moment, she thought only one person would be "surprise arrested" for the local unit's Jail-N-Bail event. She was wrong. "You guys are bad," Gibb said, smiling, as fellow Canadian Cancer Society employees and organizers "The toughest of the charges was keeping quiet for five minutes." Canadian Cancer Society Oakville chapter president Joan Gibb "Normally, I don't arrest people who are laughing." Constable Carla Draper of the surprise arrest Lisa Moffatt, Sandy McDonald and Niambia Martin looked on. "Normally, I don't arrest people who are laughing," said Draper, smiling. "You have a right to remain silent. Are you able to do that?" The charges were many. They included "failure to remain silent for longer than five minutes," impersonating the Canadian Cancer Society mascot, and remaining president for too many years Canadian Cancer Society protocol states the Unit President position is just a two-year term. Also listed in the charges was "Willfully being too enthusiastic about finding a cure for cancer." "Guilty, OK, that one I'll take," said a cuffed Gibb, who was given a striped jailbird shirt and hat to wear. "I had no idea this was happening. I'm flabbergasted," she added, smiling. "The toughest of the charges was keeping quiet for five minutes." While other people at the restaurant were surprised to see an officer arresting Gibb at first, it was obvious the arrest was a hoax especially since Gibb hugged the officer after her arrest. "This is the most fun MIKE IVANIN / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER UNDER `ARREST': Halton Police Constable Carla Draper mock arrests Canadian Cancer Society president Joan Gibb in Fifties Diner Tuesday morning to help kick off the local chapter's Jail-N-Bail fundraising event. event of them all," said the long-time Oakville unit president. "I hope everyone joins in with all the other jailbirds." The February event will mark the first time in a decade that the Oakville Cancer Society unit will be running a Jail-N-Bail event. After jailbirds are arrested on humourous charges, volunteers from the Halton Regional Police Department and the Canadian Cancer Society will pick up and `arrest' the wanted felons on Feb. 8 and bring them to `jail' at Oakville Place. There, the jailbirds will be brought before a judge, who will review the charges laid and set the bail, explained Oakville unit fundraiser, Lisa Moffatt. Gibb's bail is set at no less than $1,000. "Sentencing" will take place at Centre Court in the mall. "Once in jail, jailbirds will have the chance to call friends, colleagues, their mom--anyone that will help them raise their bail to help set them free," said Moffatt. Anyone interested in becoming a jailbird, or who knows someone that should be `arrested,' should call the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit at 905 845-5231.
