8- The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Crime Stoppers needs support Crime Stoppers of Halton is seeking a financial shot in the arm from Halton residents and businesses. The non-profit organization has started a direct mail campaign to appeal for donations from businesses across the region. Crime Stoppers relies on financial contributions from the public to operate a telephone line which takes information anonymously from individuals to help police solve crime. Plans are being made for a golf tournament and jail and bail fundraising projects to take place next year, but money is needed now to ensure the program has cash to pay rewards, said Audrey Draaisma, who chairs Crime Stoppers of Halton. "It's an extremely valuable program, but financial support is needed from both the business community and individuals to ensure it continues to have success," she said. Since its inception in 1988, the organization has helped police in solving 1,766 cases. As a result, police have recovered stolen property worth almost $1.9 million and have seized illegal drugs with a street value of more than $14 million. Board members are sending letters to businesses in Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills asking for support. Anyone wishing to make a tax deductible contribution can mail a cheque payable to Crime Stoppers of Halton, 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville, Ontario L6M 3L1. Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,000 for information that helps lead to an arrest. For more details, call 905-8254747, ext. 5139. LEGO League excitement OAKVILLE - Celebrating 150 years!
