Plans changed Tuesday night when the Mayor and several Town councillors backed away from the deal, a decision that has upset members of the historical society. A sudden and unexpected about-face by Town politicians has left a local nonprofit historical group reeling. Six months ago, Town councillors approved a plan to lease the Old Palermo schoolhouse on Dundas Street to the Trafalgar Township Historical Society (TTHS). The society, which had detailed its hope of turning the historic one-room schoolhouse into a community hub for northeast Oakville, won almost unanimous support from Town Council for its plan. Town staff was directed to prepare a licensing agreement that would allow the society to renovate the building for educational and historical programs and public meeting space. However, when that lease was brought forward to the Town's Administrative Services committee on Tuesday night, Mayor Rob Burton and several Town councillors backed away from the deal.
