2- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday December 19, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Storm knocks out power Season's greetings Happy Chanukah Feliz Navidad Shubh Naya Baras The weekend's snowstorm not only created lots of shoveling work and unsafe roads, but it deprived some Oakville residents and businesses of power for a few hours. At around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, a scaffold that was set up in front of the Staybridge Suites Hotel on Wyecroft Road, just east of Bronte, came in contact with a set of nearby power lines. "From what we can gather the wind took the scaffolding and toppled it into our two feeders (power lines)," said Bruce Evans, Director of Operations, Oakville Hydro. "The scaffolding was enclosed with plastic, I'm assuming so the workers inside would be protected from the elements, and the wind got inside and, basically, the plastic became like a large sail and pulled the scaffolding away from the side of the building and onto our two circuits." The damaged scaffold brought two power lines to the ground and also dragged down a Bell Cable and fibre cable, which carries internet service. The dead short, as Evans calls it, affected between 600-700 Oakville Hydro customers, many of whom were commercial groups located along Wyecroft Road and nearby service roads. Customers in the Glen Abbey area were also affected. Oakville Hydro crews laboured on the damage throughout Sunday with the first two circuits being repaired in about three hours while total repairs were completed by the day's end. Her mother Rosemary Koren is happy to have another set of eyes watching Emilie because of this reason. "A lot of the issues with Emilie are safety (related), she likes to bolt if we are in a parking lot and she doesn't want to go in the same direction. She may get out of your grasp and run the other way. So the dog will be attached to her with a tether and it will stop her from doing these things. It's a major safety addition to the family that will help us," said Rosemary. There are also a number of safety concerns inside the home. "It's also another set of eyes in the actual home environment. She's quite mischievous and she likes to get into a lot of things and you just can't keep an eye on her all the time," she said. "You have to do your everyday things and you don't have eyes in the back of your head, and I think what will really help is that there will be another set of eyes to help out and again she will have a friend with her." The family is thankful for the service dog. "It's something that we can't imagine what it will be like, but we know that it is going to make such a difference in Emilie's life and in our lives," said Rosemary. "I think she is going to have a friend for life and someone who will always be there for her to protect her because there are many safety issues with Emilie and many children with autism." Koren notes there aren't many services available for autistic children and thanks the creators of NSD for thinking outside the box to create a specialized action plan to make their daily lives easier. up to or $ 1,500 factory 1,250 rebate* L Last Min Gift Ideas! free 10-year parts & labour coverage* The AffinityTM y Air Conditioner and Modulating Furnace from York.
