www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 21, 2007 - 33 Your next door neighbour might be a real hottie By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville is home to one of Canada's Hotties Next Door. And ladies, just so you know, he's single. Alex Veljkovic, 19, is one of 10 guys to crack MuchMusic's Hotties Next Door list. The network asked viewers to nominate people between the ages of 16 to 25 in their quest to find the country's sexiest and most accomplished guys and girls. The show featuring the 20 top hotties airs Saturday, Dec. 22 during the network's Holiday Wrap, where ten girls and ten guys will be ranked and counted down from 10 to 1. "It feels like a compliment, I guess," Veljkovic said of cracking the top 10 hottest guys list. "I've got confidence, but there's a lot of guys out there, right. I guess I just got lucky." A native of Belgrade, Serbia who moved to Canada in 1992, Veljkovic describes his look as "very European." "Tall, slim," he said, "I don't know, broad shoulders." The competition isn't all about looks, though. MuchMusic's expert panel made their cuts based on personality, sex appeal and achievements. Veljkovic is an artist, and is currently enrolled in animation at York University. He also does martial arts, and is a former Motocross rider, who now rides street bikes. "Bikes are definitely sexy, but I Alex Veljkovic think anybody with some kind of talent, that definitely boosts their level of attraction," he said. Veljkovic started Motocross riding at age four, following in the footsteps of his father, who used to race while the family lived in Europe. "I've always just been kind of into it," said Veljkovic. "I used to watch my dad on TV and everything." On Saturday, he'll be on TV riding around on his bike as part of the Much feature, which will also include an interview. Veljkovic was nominated for the Hotties Next Door competition by his modeling agency, Toronto-based Sutherland Models, where he's been working on and off for about four months. "They called me like a day before the casting was over. They're like, `Ya, would you like to be on the show?' and I said, sure," said Veljkovic. "It all happened really quickly; it was like a blur." The agency entered a photo, and Veljkovic had to fill out a questionnaire about his hobbies, interests and more. The modeling began after he was scouted at a shopping mall. "I thought it was a good idea. I went in there and did a few jobs and it was kind of fun," he said. "I was just kind of into my own thing and the modeling thing started. Now I'm at the top and I have people chasing me around, it's terrible. They know where I live and stuff," he added, joking. The first job Veljkovic landed was for the season finale of Canada's Next Top Model. "It was like a runway show for all the girls, and they had a couple guys come in and escort them," said Veljkovic. He was one of those guys. He also did some scenes for the movie, American Pie Beta House, and some background work for Degrassi High. Veljkovic also talked about an exhibit he did for Fruits and Passion in Toronto. "I had to walk around all lubed up. I was wearing all their body creams and everything. I was shining. You'd see me from a mile away, but I smelled good," he said. "I just kind of stood there and people walked by and kind of smelled me, looked at me, and saw how the product worked." Veljkovic plans to continue with the modeling, but says school is his first priority. As for what his friends think of his cracking the Hotties Next Door list, he says, "They're dazzled. They're just amazed. Actually my friends are truly, truly amazed. They're like `Wow, they picked you out of everyone else?'" Veljkovic will find out Saturday where he ranked among the top ten guys when the show airs on MuchMusic at 9 p.m. "I think I did okay. I put on a good show. I think my interview could have been a little spicier," he said. "Even being 20th hottie, it's not bad. Better than my friends can say."
