The Oakville Trafalgar High School Grade 9 student will leave for Florida this week to race go-karts. Preston was invited to race for the Elite Juncos Racing Team in the Florida Winter Tour and will compete in the Junior Rotax division. It will be Preston's first time racing in the winter months, though he doesn't expect the racing instincts will take long to kick in after a couple of months off the track. "Hopefully it won't take too long," he said. "Maybe a day or two." The first race of the series will be held at the Homestead NASCAR track, where 68 of the best go kart racers will be competing. Preston's opportunity came up through one of his sponsors. They contacted team owner Ricardo Juncos and he extended an invitation to the 13year-old. "I've heard a lot about it and about how prestigious it is, so to get invited is very cool," Preston said. "I never thought I would be in it." Drury competes against other schools for deaf students from around the province in volleyball, ball hockey and swimming. The Rangers, with the help of sponsors Corbett's Source for Sports and IPSOS-ASI, raised money to donate to the school, which it will use to replace equipment for its elementary school-aged ball hockey players. The Rangers also bought a table hockey game for the school. "It was very nice of them -- just to get that recognition and that they were willing to do this for us," Couture said. "And everyone had a good time." "We just thought this was a great opportunity," Rogers added. "Sometimes it's tough for the kids to relate (when making a donation), but coming here and playing with these kids, I think it really helps. They're not only contributing, but they're learning some good life skills." That was apparent as the Rangers' Daniel Bingham and Drury's Dupuis huddled to plot strategy during a game of dodgeball. "It's really not that tough," Bingham said of communicating with his new teammate. "You have to speak a little slower so they can read your lips and talk with your hands more." "It helps that I can talk a little," Dupuis added. When the third ball hockey game of the evening wrapped up, the Rangers players compared notes on the sign language they had learned. That could be useful, seeing as though the players were already talking about coming back for another game in the spring.
