www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 4, 2008 - 13 YMCA has positive impact on Oakville community T he board, staff, volunteers and executive team at the YMCA of Oakville are excited to move forward into a brand new year. "As a charitable association, we know that we make a huge impact on the lives of many people in Oakville and this will continue to be our focus for 2008," said Bruce Ireland, President and CEO of the YMCA of Oakville. Reflecting on 2007, Ireland said it was a year when the Y focussed on helping people to manage their illnesses. "We're very excited about our part in the Parkinson's research program underway with Professor Quincy Almeida of Wilfrid Laurier University. Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative movement disorder, and Dr. Almeida's research seeks to prove the positive benefits of specific physical exercises on those who are affected by this debilitating disease. "Our partnership with the Halton Healthcare Cardiac Rehabilitation program, which is housed at the Y, also continues to grow and strengthen. In 2007, we helped more than 250 patients to get well by providing free space at the Peter Gilgan Y facility." In the area of children and youths, the Y has incorporated `CATCH' (Co-ordinated Approach to Child Health) into all of its programs a concept, which fosters aspects of both physical activity and nutritional health. "We are very concerned locally, provincially and nationally about the health of our children, particularly in the area of childhood obesity, and CATCH is one way we can help. For older youths, the Y offers our Leader Corps program where we teach young people to give back to their communi- ty, with initiatives like our holiday coat drive," said Ireland. "Our licenced childcare programs have helped to lay a foundation for learning for thousands of Oakville's children. YMCA teachers are dedicated to the physical, mental and social health of the kids. "For parents and for preschool children, the Y also offers the Steps & Stages programs to the community, free of charge. These programs have helped many families to develop their parenting skills and build deep bonds with their children," he continued. "We are also a key provider of day camp in Oakville. The Y fills over 4,000 camp spots each year in our values-based camps that teach important concepts like diversity, social integration, sportsmanship, teamwork and the value of good old-fashioned play. "As we look to the future, the Y is embarking on a new strategic plan where children and youths will be a key focus. Through our YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, we will support the children and families in Oakville who don't have the means to participate in health and fitness programs or childcare. We currently provide over $500,000 each year in assistance and it is our goal to spread the word of the YMCA of Oakville's impact on the community, and grow our support so that we can increase the assistance that we provide." The YMCA of Oakville is a charitable association open to all, dedicated to providing lifelong opportunities for health enhancement and personal growth. -- Submitted by the YMCA of Oakville.
