Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School of Glen Abbey may not be the biggest or prettiest high school in town, but it is an incredibly special place, full of young people with all sorts of dreams. Making dreams come true has been the focus of one of Loyola's newest undertakings. The young workers of the Dominican Republic Education And M S project, or, fittingly, the DREAMS project, have signed up for the adventure of a lifetime. This group of 13 senior students will embark on a trip to an underprivileged area of the Dominican Republic to build a house and provide support to that country. The spirit of DREAMS has already taken hold at Loyola: the committee is running several events to fund its efforts within the school. Many of the DREAMS members are excited to be taking on this once-in-alifetime opportunity, but more importantly, are dedicated to helping improve the lives of people in a country far away from us, who lead lives very different HALTON CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD COMMUNITY NEWS RELEASE INFORMATION ON THE SCHOOL ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY REVIEW FOR THE OAKVILLE CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS As we communicated to you in our previous News Release, a School Boundary Review Committee (SBRC) has been established and assigned the task to review the school attendance boundary options for Holy Trinity, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary Schools in accordance with Board Policy I-29. The Oakville Catholic Secondary Schools SBRC consists of representatives, who are voting members, from each of the Holy Trinity, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School Councils and Board staff members who are non-voting members and are advisors to the committee. The SBRC has had several meetings and consulted with both elementary and secondary school council representatives. After careful consideration and discussion, the SBRC has prepared an Interim Report on the Oakville Catholic secondary schools school attendance boundary review. As is outlined in the Interim Report, the SBRC has developed and evaluated numerous school attendance boundary scenarios for Holy Trinity, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary Schools. The SBRC has selected three potential school attendance boundary options for the Oakville Catholic secondary schools for additional review, comment and input by the Oakville Catholic school communities. The Interim Report and the three potential new school attendance boundary options for the Oakville Catholic secondary schools will be posted on the Board Website on Friday, December 14, 2007. The SBRC will present the Interim Report to the Board of Trustees at the December 18, 2007 Regular Meeting of the Board. The Interim Report and the potential school attendance boundary options will be presented by the SBRC at a Community Open House/Public Information Meeting on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. This public information/consultation session will be held in the cafeteria at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School, 1550 Nottinghill Gate. The format for this public information/consultation session will be as follows: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM · Open House View Interim Report, enrolment data, boundary option map displays and talk with committee members · Formal Start of Meeting Presentation of Interim Report & Boundary Options · Question & Answer Period from those we have in Oakville. Loyola is also full of students willing to help out a little closer to home. Loyola Prefects, a group devoted to improving student life, has been active since September, when it ran Friendfest, a day in which Grade 9 students were able to meet and have fun with each other. The Prefects have steadily assisted staff with many events throughout first semester, making things at school more fun and more comfortable for all students. In 2008, the Prefects will take on an Anti-Tobacco Initiative, hoping to cut down on teenage smoking. While some find their calling in community work, others find a way to relax, and make their mark on their high school through sports. Loyola has also had a fantastic athletic record, with many of its sports teams making it to Halton and Ontario championships. Even though we are not even half way through the year, the Loyola Hawks have dominated the field again. When the boys hockey team went to Montreal to compete against many other Canadian schools for the Canadian Cup, no one expected it to come out on top, but the boys shocked them all by taking it all home. With all of the gains at Loyola this year, it is inevitable that we may suffer some losses. In September, Loyola lost one of its most active students when Grade 11 student James Melton passed away. James was a dedicated member of Loyola's Social Justice Club, as well as the Prefects, Yearbook Committee, and SOMA, a model UN club; he was also interested in being a member of the DREAMS project this year. James also won the Father Fogarty Award, a very high honour within the Catholic school system. The action at Loyola doesn't stop with those remarkable triumphs: many other clubs and sports for every interest and ability exist at the school. If we look beyond the surface, we are incredibly lucky to attend Loyola, where so many opportunities await us. Loyola is truly a remarkable school, where dreams are born, and in many cases, become a reality. Carpet Cleaning Specialists Since 1952 7:30 PM 8:00 PM Spot! It is expected that a final decision on the recommended school attendance boundaries for Holy Trinity, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary Schools will be made by the Board at the February 19, 2008 Regular Meeting of the Board.
