www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 4, 2008 - 29 Classic comedy Charley's Aunt Charley's Aunt opens Jan. 10 at Oakville Centre by Brandon Thomas British actor Brandon Thomas likely had no idea the play he wrote in 1892 for his company to perform would create such a phenomenon. Charley's Aunt broke the record for longest run in London, and in New York two years later. It has spawned four films, two TV versions, a musical, and countless revivals in professional and community theatres around the globe. This hilarious play is Burl-Oak Theatre Group's (BOTG) next production at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, set to open Thursday, Jan. 10. The play follows Victorian-era collegians, Jack and Charles, who have invited their sweethearts for a date. This is set to be chaperoned by Charley's dowager aunt Donna Lucia, scheduled for a visit from Brazil. When the aunt's arrival is delayed, the boys improvise, pressing their friend Babberley into feminine attire to impersonate her. Things proceed swimmingly until, of course, the real Donna Lucia arrives. The comedy reaches a fever pitch of mistaken identity, romantic intrigue, and knockabout farce. Director Peter Kunder is no stranger to farce, having directed last year's production, The Noble Pursuit. "What surprised me about Charley's Aunt," he says, "is how genuinely funny the text is. It really jumps off the page." That sentiment is echoed by the two youngest cast members, David DiMarco and Carling Tedesco. "It's great to be able to improvise and use our own ideas for staging," said DiMarco, a recent graduate of Oakville Trafalgar High School. Added Tedesco, a student at St. Mildred's Lightbourn, "It feels very modern. Sure, it's a classic comedy, but we're in stitches at every rehearsal." Audiences may also be surprised by the casting of six-foot-four Chris Stolz in the role of aunt-impersonator Babberley. Rounding out the cast are BOTG veterans Jenn Worsnop, David Kinlough. Nick Forrow, Andy Rowe, Rob McMullan, Katherine Kormos, and making her BOTG debut, Cynthia Dempster.
