To make this positive mark, Christina volunteered to co-host the McMaster Children's Hospital's annual celebration telethon. In 2002, she volunteered to work full-time at the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Office. However, it was not until her friend Katy McDonald of Burlington was hospitalized with cancer, an illness from which she would never recover, that Christina's desire to help received real direction. "She (Katy) had been missing her computer dear- ly and because her mom and my mom are good friends we also learned about the stresses she had gone through and so we said, `Why not put laptops in the laps of sick kids or give them Internet access or give them something to communicate with friends and family during their stay," said Christina. McMaster Children's Hospital acknowledged it would be interested in adopting such a program and over the next three and a half years the idea was transformed into a reality with Basile bringing in the necessary players to make it Available at these locations 2423 Trafalgar Rd. "I have a good friend at TELUS, Executive Vice-President Joe Natale, who we invited to McMaster to present him with our concept and it took him like milliseconds to decide, `Okay we're going to do this,'" said Basile. "From there it was just momentum. I put in another call to a friend who knows someone at Toshiba, the Director of Marketing Communications Sherry Lyons, and I met with her and described what we were doing and told her that I needed 20 laptops and she said, `When do you want to pick up.'" Christina tested the network throughout the summer and as a result of these efforts McMaster Children's hospital now has 20 laptops at the disposal of their young patients who check them out in much the same way someone would check out a book from a library. The Internet portal allows children to keep up with their homework as well as stay connected to friends and family, and even provides a selection of kidfriendly games, all with the intention of making their hospital stay a little more enjoyable. Basile said his motivation to carry this project forward came from the knowledge that he had the ability to do so. "It's easy to give a cheque, but if you have the ability, you can do more," he said. "Through a very unfortunate, but ultimately good experience with Christina, a window opened and it was just a question of whether I wanted to step through it. There was enough of a network around me that I could do this." Not satisfied with bringing Upopolis solely to McMaster, Basile and Christina have plans underway to implement the network at two more children's hospitals in the near future. Their final goal is to bring Upopolis to all children's hospitals across Canada.
