When her son Steve expressed an interest in playing hockey, she was horrified to hear that he wanted to be a goalie. "It's just awful. When the other team scores, everyone looks at the goalie," she said. "It's just a lot easier to be the one scoring the goal than being the one being scored against." She convinced her son to play forward, but after two years his desire to play net was still there. Mom finally relented. So, at the age of 11, he donned the goalie pads for the first time. Now, eight years later, the exact situation she had dreaded was playing itself out in front of the entire country. With Canada just 38 seconds from winning the world junior hockey championship, Sweden's Tomas Larsson swatted at a rebound that found its way through a maze of legs and into the back of the Canadian net. The game was going to overtime and all eyes would be on her son -- the goalie. And Donna Mason thought seeing someone score on her son in Minor Oaks house league games was tough. Family, friends and neighbours, who gathered to watch the game at the Mason home, sat through the longest intermission ever. Jean Pollock, Steve's grandmother, couldn't bear to watch.
