www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 9, 2008 - 7 Sam-Son Farm president and GM was leading figure in thoroughbred racing Cancer claims 47-year-old Tammy Samuel-Balaz A visitation was held Tuesday at Glen Oaks Memorial Chapel for Tammy Samuel-Balaz, one of Canada's most influential figures in thoroughbred racing. Samuel-Balaz died Saturday after a long battle with cancer. She was 47 years old. An accomplished equestrian champion, Samuel-Balaz was president and general manager of the Milton-based Sam-Son Farm, founded by her dad, Ernie. The farm has become one of Canada's leading racing and breeding organizations. In the more than 30 years Sam-Son Farm has been in operation, it has produced some of Canada's most famous thoroughbreds, including Dance Smartly, Sky Classic and Chief Bearheart, who was Canadian Horse of the Year in 1997 and '98. The stable has won a slew of awards, including four Queen's Plates. Samuel-Balaz took over the family business after the death of her father in 2000. In addition to being director of Sam-Son Farm, she was also a director of Woodbine Entertainment Group, the Jockey Club of New York, The Jockey Club of Canada, and Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. Woodbine Racetrack made the announcement Monday, and lowered its flags to half-mast in Samuel-Balaz's memory. She is survived by her husband, Rick, and their children, Michael and Lisa. A private family funeral was scheduled to take place. The family has requested donations be made to the cancer care or research organization of choice.
