22 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 11, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Concert to raise awareness for Ugandan orphans tonight A Ugandan children's choir is bringing a taste of Africa to Oakville tonight to raise awareness and funds for the Ugandan orphan crisis. The Watoto Children's Choir will perform a Concert of Hope, featuring exotic African rhythm and harmonies, on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at Riveroaks Church, 2435 Munns Ave. E. The choir is on a Canadian tour to raise awareness and support for Watoto, a childsponsorship organization that cares for more than 1,700 children in Uganda, East Africa. Watoto was founded in 1992 by Canadians Gary and Marilyn Skinner to address the Ugandan orphan crisis. The children Watoto cares for have been orphaned or abandoned as a result of the AIDS epidemic, civil strife, extreme poverty, or other catastrophic events. Approximately 2.3 million children in Uganda have been orphaned an estimated 1 million due to AIDS alone. Currently, there are three Watoto Children's Villages in Kampala, Uganda, providing care and education for orphaned and abandoned children. The Oakville concert is free and open to the public.
