Little League senior nationals coming to Oakville this summer Oakville Little League has been named as the host association for this year's Canadian Senior League Baseball Championships. The official announcement of Oakville's selection was made at a recent Little League Ontario meeting. The championships, to be held from July 31 to Aug. 8, will feature 15- and 16-year-old players representing British Columbia, the prairie provinces, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic region. As tournament host, the Oakville Little League senior squad will also compete. All games will be played at River Oaks Park. The winning team will move on to represent Canada at the 2008 Senior League World Series. "We are honoured that Little League Canada and Little League Ontario have selected us to host such a prestigious national championship," said John Sweeney, Oakville Little League president. "This tournament provides us with an opportunity to showcase the fine young athletes of Oakville and from across Canada, as well as providing the opportunity to showcase the beautiful town of Oakville and Oakville Little League." Oakville mayor Rob Burton, the event's honourary chairman, added, "Council recognizes the value that hosting this event will bring to our community. We encourage all residents and businesses to get involved and help make this event a success." Sweeney said Oakville Little League intends to make this year's senior national championships a memorable event. "For many of these young people, competing in a tournament of this magnitude will be the experience of a lifetime," he said. "Win or lose, we want the players to always think about the 10 days they spent in Oakville in the summer of 2008, the fond experience and fun they had, the friendships they made, and the hospitality of Oakville." Oakville Little League vice-president John Mooney, co-chair of the championships, said the league is actively seeking for a major sponsor to help support the event. Anyone interested in sponsorship or volunteering to help with organization and running of the event, or seeking more information, is invited to call the Oakville Little League office at 905-827-1831.
