Oakville acquired 6-foot-4 defenceman Braden Birch from the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League, sending cash the other way. Since the Hamilton Red Wings held the rights to Birch in the Provincial Junior A loop, the Blades also sent money to the Red Wings to complete the deal. Birch, who has accepted a scholarship from Cornell University for 2009, had not seen game action in nearly a month after suffering a high ankle sprain. "It's a hard thing to do, but it's part of the business." Proceeds from the evening will go towards offsetting costs from the prestigious tournament, which will attract more than 2,300 players from 16 different countries. Tonight's fundraiser, which will begin at 7:30, will feature door prizes, raffles, a silent auction, a live auction and more. Donations will also be accepted. Former Oakville Rangers player Stefan Legein, fresh off helping Canada win gold at the world junior championships, is expected to make an appearance.
