"She makes a lot of noises, but she hasn't talked. The progress from last year at this time to now has just been astronomical. No one can really tell us what her limitations are going to be, though. The only thing that can help her right now is therapy." Schizencephaly is characterized by abnormal slits, or clefts, in the brain's cerebral hemispheres. Essentially, Holly is missing about one-quarter of the front hemisphere of her brain. McLauchlan-Taylor and Taylor are doing their best to pay for therapy and medical needs themselves while they can. Milton residents have really stepped up to the plate in terms of fundraising for Holly, money that's sitting in a bank account for when the family really needs it. "We're trying to do as "It all started before Holly was one year old. We sort of realized the expense, and I decided something had to be done." Jackie Osmond Patrick much as we can on our own because I know when Holly gets older, that's when most of the medical needs are going to come into play," said McLauchlan-Taylor. Aside from using the fund for the camp, she says it's been largely untouched. It was Osmond Patrick who decided to create the fund for Holly. "It all started before Holly was one year old," said Osmond Patrick. "We sort of realized the expense, and I decided something had to be done." "My aunt has just been amazing," McLauchlanTaylor said. "She was really on board at first when we couldn't get anybody to even talk to us. She was calling doctors, fully on board. Osmond Patrick made a similar calendar last year to fundraise for her grand niece. The size of this year's calendar is 13inches by 19-inches, featuring 12 photographs, quotations, and a family organizer along with the standard calendar. Each month of the 2008 calendar includes a different photograph of nature scenic views, clouds, sand, plants and December, which is Holly's birth month, is a photo of the little girl smiling. "Whoever gets the calendar, it will bring awareness, whether they go into her website and donate some money, or just find out more about her," said Osmond Patrick. Getting the word out about Holly and her condition, Osmond Patrick says, has already yielded some helpful responses. "We've had phone calls from people, whether they're a doctor or not, they've been able to give us some insight," she said. "The response has been great." The calendars are on sale in a Toronto book store, and Osmond Patrick is looking for Oakville venues that would like to carry the calendars. About 30 per cent of the sale of each calendar will go directly to help Holly. "It's just a way I can help her with my art, put it to good use, and give Courtney and Ken the piece of mind to know we're doing everything we can," Osmond Patrick said. "It's something I plan to continue to do for Holly." The artist wanted to get Holly's story circulated in Oakville, since this is where she receives many of the medical services she needs. "I truly wanted to let the whole Oakville community know about her as well. I would like to get it out there more," said Osmond Patrick. "I just know that having two healthy kids and bringing up a family is hard enough, let alone having all of that. I just sort of realized how difficult it is on regular terms. This is beyond any one family's means." Those interested in purchasing a calendar to assist Holly should call Jackie Osmond Patrick at 905-4655224, email josmondpatrick@sympatico.ca, or visit her website at www.josmondpatrick.photoreflect.com. Osmond Patrick will also be selling the calendars at an art show at CJ's Café in Bronte, opening Feb. 5. Each calendar costs $40 plus tax.
