The conference was held at Iroquois Ridge High School. Grade 9 geography students of the high school received the oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in this remarkable event. It was held to eliminate prejudices about different faiths and help us understand each other. By teaching us to accept, not just to tolerate each other's beliefs, we can eliminate biased opinions based on misinterpretation, which today causes discrimination. The afternoon began with an inspirational introductory address from the guest speaker Lucky Singh, who spoke about his various life experiences involving the discrimination of his faith, religion, and culture. Students then proceeded to different booths in the theatre and gym, where they looked at displays, asked questions, and learned from respected faith leaders as they spoke to them about their specific religion, its practices, history, beliefs and more. In only one afternoon, the students picked up quite a bit of information about the various aspects of Baha'i, Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism. At the end of the day, there was a closing speech and questions were directed at the Council that represented the different religions. We were two of the very fortunate Grade 9 students who have received the opportunity to take part in this extraordinary conference and we can firmly state that it was a very insightful and educational experience. The most important thing we learned that afternoon was that all religions are different paths toward the same goal and we are all more similar than we might think. It taught us to respect everyone even if they are of a different faith because faith is just that: a strong belief that you cannot prove. This unique conference was made possible through the participation and the massive effort put in by the Halton Regional Police Service, Halton Multicultural Council (HMC), the Interfaith Council of Halton, and many other volunteers from Iroquois Ridge. We will take the lessons from this conference with us throughout life -- lessons of understanding and acceptance. We strongly believe that other students should have the opportunity to take part in a conference like this because it will teach them that unity exists in diversity.
