Young filmmakers focusing on Alzheimer's for short film By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF group of Sheridan students will shed light on the life of a caregiver struggling to help his mother, who's in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's ­ all in 10 minutes. This is the premise of Serious Moment, a short film currently in the works, headed by Advanced Film and Television students Trevor Pickett, Chris Pozzebon and Hollis Ludlow-Carroll. The intent of the film is to increase A awareness of Alzheimer's Disease ­ once it's finished, the trio plan to use Serious Moment to launch a donation drive for the Alzheimer Society of Canada. "We thought with January being Alzheimer's Awareness month, this is a good time to let people know about what we're doing," said Ludlow-Carroll, 25, the film's producer. The script was written by Pickett, who got the idea after reading an article in the newspaper about a young man whose mother had Alzheimer's. "It was about their close relationship, and I kind of built off that," said the 24-yearold Hamilton resident. Pickett chose to make the caregiver, a 30-something year-old named Tom, a struggling stand-up comedian. "I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition. I liked the idea of somebody having so much tragedy in their personal lives, yet who's trying to make it as a comedian," said Pickett. "While all this is going on at home, how are you supposed to think about funny things?" Pozzebon, the director, has seen this caregiving role up close through his nana, a retired nurse. He also saw his mother's friend go through the throws of Alzheimer's. "I drew from a very personal fear of the disease," said the 24-year-old. "It's basically the scariest thing in the world to me, to not know people or yourself anymore, and to forget and not know the people you love."
