www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 18, 2008 - 29 Sultans of String to kick off series Jan. 25 The award-winning Sultans of String will launch the 2008 Music After Eight Series at CJ's Café in Bronte on Friday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. The Sultans of String will take the audience on an improvised musical journey that includes Latin, jazz and folk rhythms. The Sultans of String group is composed of Kevin Laliberte, Chris McKhool and Drew Birston. They are ranked first in Top Ten World/Folk Canadian Campus and Community Chart, and their CD, Luna, is now carried by Festival Distribution. Chris McKhool, who plays the violin, grew up in a house always full of music. His pianoplaying mother was born in Cairo and his ancestors on his father's side were from Lebanon. Together with guitarist Kevin Laliberte, McKhool has drawn on the rhythms of Spain, Morocco, his own Middle Eastern heritage, French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, and his trips across the globe. Laliberte and McKhool have dedicated themselves to the rhythms and melodies of the world. McKhool was traveling and sharing music abroad in the Canadian Arctic, Indonesia, France, England, Cuba, Peru, Guatemala, Indian Himalayas and Costa Rica when he met Laliberte, who had been touring internationally with Jesse Cook since 1999, with the Chieftains, on The Tonight Show and across Asia. This was the beginning of the Sultans of String. The group has since taken its music to festivals, music series and clubs across North America. Past performances include at the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival, Toronto City Roots Festival, Ontario Contact 2006 Showcase and a special performance for European Union Consuls General.
