16 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 23, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Latest round of CFO grants focus on youths A pressing need for youth services in Oakville was targeted with the latest round of grants approved by The Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO). A total of $53,000 will be dispersed for charitable programs, with approximately 87 per cent going to specific services for youths. "Support for our youth is an investment that will ensure that our community remains strong and healthy," said June Cockwell who heads up the CFO's Grants Committee in a statement outlining the recent grants. Through the following CFO programs, 13 organizations will receive funding: · Ontario Endowment for Children & Youth in Recreation: $20,850 granted. · Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Halton (subsidized children's camp for families facing financial and other barriers). · Transitions for Youth (mentoring program to encourage at-risk children to participate in recreation programs). · Kerr Street Community Services (training youth leaders in music, arts and sports to support other youth). · Oakville Galleries (a matching fund to support art education programs). · Oakville Environmental Fund: $9,200 granted to T.A. Blakelock High School (student-driven eco-conference as a model for Oakville's first high-school environmental symposium; bike racks to encourage biking to school). · Oakville Children's Choir (multi-arts/environmental festival to inspire ecology) · Community Fund: $23,250 granted to Halton Trauma Centre (funding assessments of child trauma that will direct treatment). · Oakville Historical Society (Doors Open event to allow access into heritage sights not normally open to public). · Crime Stoppers of Halton (high school Safe School program) · Eastview Public School (boys' literacy project). · Oak Park Mom & Tot (stress-management for kids). · Oakville Wind Orchestra (subsidized joint performance with Juno award winning artist) · St. Jude's Anglican Church (funding for young artists to perform in Celebration of the Arts). The CFO links community-minded citizens to charitable needs by managing permanent endowed funds and distributing income from those funds to local charities. Since 1997, more than $10 million has been granted. The next granting session deadline is March 14, 2008. Those interested in applying for a grant, or wish to make a lasting contribution to a favourite charity through the CFO, should contact Anne Miskey, Director of Community Initiatives at 905845-5547 or visit www.thecfo.org. Use lighter shades of eye shadow during the day, and go darker at night. A shimmering highlighter applied just beneath the eyebrow gives even the most tired looking peepers a lift. And always apply your mascara in thin coats, building up the length and thickness slowly. This helps to avoid that terrible clumping which can happen it you try to apply too much, too soon. Beauty tip - blend your eyeliner with a thin layer of eye shadow. This will make your eyes look absolutely magnetic!
