14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 25, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville riding NDP AGM Monday at Town Hall The Oakville New Democratic Party (NDP) Riding Association will hold its annual general meeting on Monday, Jan. 28 at Oakville Town Hall. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. Featured will be guest speaker and Toronto social justice activist, Pierre Chenier. "We're pleased to have Pierre address our membership about the need for a progressive alternative to the government of Stephen Harper," said Riding Association president Brian Hopkins. "Only the NDP, along with its allies in progressive organizations and the labour movement, are putting forth solutions to the problems of environmental ruin, poverty, and the marginalization of citizens and civil society," said Hopkins. The Oakville NDP Riding Association will also be electing its new executive for 2008 and planning for future activities. "The New Democratic Party across the country is gaining strength," said executive member Raychyl Whyte. "Our membership base is expanding and we're preparing for a very active year," said Whyte. These activities include preparations for the upcoming federal election, which may take place as early as April 2008. "With a federal campaign looming, we're looking forward to running on issues that matter to Oakville, such as good-paying jobs, decent health care and education, a commitment to global peace and security, and most importantly, a government that actually listens to people," added Hopkins. Although only NDP members can vote at the meeting, all are welcome to attend. "We have an open house policy at our events," said Whyte. "We hope that people will come out and make their voices heard. We look forward to seeing you there," Whyte added. The Regional Sustainable Halton Municipality of Halton www.halton.ca More Blue and Green for a Better Planet Our Community. Our Future. Our Plan.
