28 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 25, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Britney Spears? Let's talk about Kenya By Devon Bradley, GRADE 12, ST. MILDRED'S LIGHTBOURN SCHOOL O ops, she did it again; Britney Spears has lost the "privilege" to visit with her children. Those two young innocent boys go to their father, Kevin Federline, who sadly enough is seen as the fit parent. But I ask you, who really gives any thought to this former pop princess, for now she seems to devote her time to roaming around intoxicated and walking barefoot in public washrooms. Oh, no. I have just spent my precious time writing and thinking about her, so for your sake, as well as mine, I am going to stop talking about her, and perhaps draw your attention to some more serious issues, that I believe deserves a tad more attention than the out-of-control Britney. The crisis in Kenya is rather deserving of receiving worldwide attention, and perhaps if people paid as much attention to this chaotic country as they did to Britney, maybe something could be done to improve the horrific violence that is occurring in Kenya. It may have seemed that Kenya was on its way to becoming a stable and developed country. Perhaps even a showcase for other African states. However, the dreams of future progress were quickly shattered after the controversial election, which resulted in the re-election of President Mwai Kibaki. After this election, the supporters of candidate Ralia Odinga pushed for a joint government of three months, for they believed the election was rigged. The Kibaki government immediately rejected it. Tribes such as Luo and Kalenjin, which strongly support Odinga, are the Dr. Kathleen O'Connor & Staff are pleased and proud to announce that surgery at the ONE ON ONE WITH A PHYSICIAN, NUTRITIONIST & PERSONAL TRAINER WEIGHT LOSS SOME CONDITIONS APPLY OHIP COVERED CUSTOMIZED MEAL & EXERCISE PLANS THAT BOOST YOUR METABOLISM is now performed using CAT HOSPITAL OF BURLINGTON RESULTS THAT LAST NO MEDICATION, NO TREATMENTS, NO SURGERIES LASER TECHNOLOGY 552 Brant Street, Burlington 905-631-6552 NO GIMMICKS METABOLIC CENTRES OF CANADA 9054836231 www.metaboliccentres.com CORNER OF THIRD LINE AND DUNDAS INSIDE MEDICAL ONE alleged perpetrators and initiators of the violence. It was only days after the election, did the angry opposing tribes intentionally burn down a church containing members of the Kikuyu tribe, who are in support of Kibaki. And since this attack, an estimate of more than 10,000 people have fled their homes, and hundreds more have died either from random explosions in their villages, or being captured and/or killed by members of the Orange Democratic Movement. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the name, which has been given to the Odinga supporters, and it seems unless their demands are met, the ODM will continue to use physical violence and force to get what they believe they deserve, and that is a reelection and for Kibaki to admit the election was indeed false. If that were to happen however, Mwai Kibaki would have to admit the election was rigged, and could be the cause of more violent disruption within the country. U.S. President George Bush and Condoleezza Rice have seemed to acknowledged the event, the United Nations has put out a statement it is devastated and frustrated by the event, and Canada has donated one million dollars to the Red Cross, which allowed food and supplies to be brought into the country. Hundreds have been killed in Kenya, and yet there is still worry over whether Britney is back in rehab. I say silence the talk of Britney, and focus the obsessive attention and worry on a country that is in dire need of support. I mean, if we can't do that, what does this tell us about our values and priorities? RENOVATING? DON'T FORGET THE FIREPLACE!
