4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 25, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Operating engineers at work for Kenya By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Dozens of engineers endured winter's fierce cold on Friday to announce the kickoff to an event that could make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of orphans in Kenya. Mike Gallagher, business manager for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793, announced his organization wants to raise money for purchasing and shipping a bulldozer to the Mully Children's Family Foundation by holding a gala fundraiser April 5. The foundation, which was visited by Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, provides food, shelter and education to children, who otherwise would be condemned to live on Kenya's exceedingly mean streets. "There are close to 2,000 kids under this man's care," Cup Sized Swimwear in sizes 6-18 NEW ARRIVALS Selected styles of swimwear on sale up to 50% off said Flynn, who was also present at the kick-off. "These kids have lost their parents to the HIV/AIDS virus. They've been street kids. They've been abused. They've been through things that you would just not imagine. You think you've heard it all in Canada until you hear the stories that these kids tell you. The abuse that takes place over there is just something that would make street life in this country look not too bad." Flynn went on to note that Charles Mulli, the self-made man, who walked away from a successful business to create the Mully Children's Family Foundation, could do much more for his orphans if he had a bulldozer at his disposal. The simple piece of construction equipment would allow Mulli to clear more farmland to feed the orphans and expand his operations, so he could take more children off the streets. Mulli's problems have increased since December when Kenya's disputed elections threw the African country into chaos. In a shocking example of the anarchy now taking place, arsonists burned one of the farms Mulli leased to feed his orphans. "They have some very, very significant problems in that country as we all know from watching the news," said Gallagher.
