All of the accomplishments of this program were not lost on those touring the facility, "I'm just really impressed by the process and how thorough it is. The object of the program is obviously to get these appliances off the grid and to lower the energy demand in the province, but it's good to see how carefully they're being treated once they get here and how much is being recycled," said Flynn. "Energy conservation benefits all of us and it was nice to see the Great Refrigerator Roundup having such a positive impact right here in our community. It's a great example of how as individuals we can do our part to conserve energy while saving money and with 98.6 per cent of each old unit being fully recycled we can do it responsibly." The true level of what the program does for Oakville and Ontario was also pointed to by Love in something he called the three Es. "The first is the economy, by getting rid of inefficient refrigerators or freezers this program will save people $150 a year. That's good for everyone. People can get five cases of beer or a trip to the grocery store, there's lots of things people can do with $150 rather than waste it on a fridge they don't use very much," said Love. "It's good for employment. Arca won a competition to handle this program province-wide, they hired 83 people so it's good for local employment. Lastly this is really good for the environment. We're helping to reduce energy consumption, the units are being recycled, the Freon is being captured so this is a really win, win, win situation and what we're hoping is the success of this program will translate to other programs." Ontarians interested in participating in the Great Refrigerator Roundup can get complete details from the OPA's Every Kilowatt Counts (EKC) website: www.everykilowattcounts.ca.
