www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 1, 2008 - 13 Debates just got better H ave you been asked about an issue that had to be debated or researched for a school project? The Oakville Public Library has the answer. The research can be completed in school, in the library or at home. All you need is a valid library card and access to the Internet. OPL has access to a bank of Thompson Gale databases. In particular, the `Opposing Viewpoints Resource Centre' will be sure to help with most topical issues. It is a virtual library of resources designed to aid in the study of today's hottest issues. The database covers topics ranging from stem cell research to gun control and will give balanced viewpoints with reasons and references supporting both `for' and `against' the chosen topic. Various media are available to view including magazines, journals, charts, podcasts and court overviews, making citing references much easier for the user. Teen Services Librarian at OPL, Shauna Clinning knows access to these databases are a welcome resource. "Opposing Viewpoints is one of the library's newer databases that is particularly relevant for secondary school students. TeacherLibrarians I have introduced to the resource are impressed." She thinks it will be used mainly for class debates and projects. "It is a searchable database that provides students with `opposing viewpoint' newspaper, journal and reference articles on current affairs and social issues. It is particularly useful for students looking for information or statistics on both sides of a debate or different points of view. This resource is not just the internet; it is a virtual library if you want to think of it like that, and you need your library card to access it." Students and teachers who use the Opposing Viewpoints database for their debates and projects can also do so in the knowledge that the content is national-curriculum focused, allowing educators to quickly identify material by grade and discipline. The userfriendly interface captures student interest and is consistent with user experience across many other databases. "This is just the tool that students need schools are always running debates and it is an important part of any youth's learning curve to understand differing viewpoints on many issues. Learning products like these will give students more options to grow and excel academically," said Lori Sims, Oakville Public Library's new CEO. For information on any of these online resources or to simply give it a try, come down to a local Oakville Public Library branch or visit www.opl.on.ca and click the Databases - Online Resources link on the right hand side under Research and Reading. You can connect from home by entering the 14-digit barcode from your library card (no spaces). Then enter your PIN (usually the last four digits of your phone number). If you have any questions, contact your local library branch or submit your query to the Central library's e-mail reference service at oplreference@oakville.ca. Alternatively, add oplreference@hotmail.com to your MSN list and instant message your query to library reference staff. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library Premature Ejaculation Is climaxing too quickly or too soon affecting your sexual relationship?
