www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 8, 2008 - 27 Art Jam items still up for grabs By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An elementary school desk, hub caps, records, clip boards even part of a Porsche. These are just some of the parts Sheridan students and illustration industry professionals were using as their artistic canvas at the college's inaugural Art Jam, which saw more than 250 artistically minded individuals file into Sheridan's nightclub for the purpose of creating. Now, the results of the night-long Art Jam are up for grabs at an online auction that closes tonight, proceeds of which will benefit this year's Sheridan Illustration Grad Art Show in April. "We have work by some of the biggest names in Canada in terms of illustration in this auction," said Art Jam co-organizer and fourth year illustration student, Tyrel McNicol, 22. Work authored by famous artists Gary Taxali, Joe Morse, Kathryn Adams, Julia Breckenreid, Joel Castillo, Marco Cibola and Alexei Vella, many of whom teach at Sheridan College, is up for grabs at the auction. These were just some of the professionals to contribute their artistic expertise to the Sheridan event. "It was really nice of the professional artists to donate their work," said Art Jam co-organizer, Amanda Sheehan, a second year illustration student. "They easily could be making so much money with their work if they sold it privately." The students estimate a clipboard painted on by Joe Morse, who has worked for clients including Nike, Rolling Stone and Coca-Cola, would go for $1,000 if it was sold privately. Its starting auction price is $50. "I've admired the work of Joe Morse for years," said Sheehan, 19. "It was amazing to be able to work with people you never dreamed you'd work with. At the Art Jam, people actually had a chance to work with their idols." One of the most popular pieces artists worked on was an elementary school desk. "There were five artists, just working on this, sitting all around the desk the whole night. They were all around it, painting, collaging," said McNicol. "The desk really got worked on because it's such a unique item." It's among about 40 pieces the students deemed could be sold, which are available to view and bid on at www.creativerepublic.ca/artjam. The auction closes Friday, Feb 8 at midnight. All proceeds will go to the 2007-2008 Sheridan Illustration Grad Show in Toronto at Burrough's Building on Queen St. W., slated for April 24 and 25. "It's a huge grad show in Toronto, at a huge gallery, and we invite everyone in the industry," McNicol explained, noting it costs upwards of $50,000 to put on. "That's originally why we wanted to host this Art Jam, and we also wanted to introduce the different years of illustration students to each other. It just went crazy from there. Everyone wanted to get involved." McNicol and Sheehan put everything together in just three weeks, providing not only a plethora of unique canvases for artists to paint on, but also other entertainment, including a deejay and break dancers from Table of Elements. "It was an absolute frenzy," McNicol said. "The Art Jam completely blew our expectations out of the water," added Sheehan, who noted it will become a bi-annual event. "It was so much bigger than we ever imagined it would be. "Everybody walked through the door and just started painting. On records, hubcaps, we had a Camara spoiler, we had the side of a Porsche. Everyone was creating." ART AUCTION: Sheridan College Art Jam co-organizers Amanda Sheehan and Tyrel McNicol pose with items up for grabs at an online auction. Bidding closes tonight.
