Some members participated in competitions in Montreal, Ottawa, Atlanta and London, with locals taking home medals from two of the events. In Montreal, Jacek Baldowski (veteran men's epee) and Kirsten Ball (open women's epee) claimed gold, while Leah Fidanza came 18th in open women's foil. At the next event, the Carleton Team Invitational in Ottawa, the team of Gabriella Shand, Allison Spencer and Fidanza placed fifth in the women's foil division. Atlanta was the next stop for Canadian Fencing Academy competitors, where the fourth stop of the North American Cup of Fencing was held. Baldowski was 45th in men's epee, while Ball placed 72nd in women's. The final meet of the month was held in London, the Hero's Open. Janet Jackowski (silver in women's epee) and Eleanor Harvey (bronze in women's foil) were the two local medal-winners, while Fidanza (sixth in women's foil), Mike Deinhart (12th in men's epee), Mike Kreder (14th in men's foil), Stephen Willson (18th in men's epee) also had strong showings. St. Luke girls win Avenger Classic title The St. Luke Gators girls won five straight games, including a 28-24 victory over Our Lady of Peace in the final, to win the Avenger Classic basketball tournament. The Gators won their pool with round-robin wins over the host St. Andrew's, St. James and St. Francis to finish 3-0 in the eight-team tournament. They followed that up with a semifinal win over St. Bernadette, which went on to win the bronze medal. The Gators then claimed the gold medal by defeating Our Lady of Peace in the championship game. Team members are Laura Medlock, Abbey Jagodkin, Samantha Turchyn, Deanna Spagnuolo, Jessica Demello, Jasmine Zanussi, Michelle Denley, Victoria Szablowki, Isabella Triolo, Marisa Parsons, Sara Haba, Alysia DaSilva, Tiffany Turchyn, Megan O'Donnell and Sara Habal. The coaches are Mr. Sloan, Mrs. Gazzola and Mrs. Schroeder. THE AVENGERS: The St. Luke Gators girls' basketball team won the Avenger Classic basketball tournament. Paddler, coach in running for Canadian Sport Awards Local kayaker Adam van Koeverden and Burloak Canoe Club coach Scott Oldershaw are among the finalists for this year's Canadian Sports Awards, the True Sport Foundation announced yesterday. The awards recognize excellence in Canadian sport, and honour athletes, coaches, volunteers, leaders, inspired youth and more. Van Koeverden is among three finalists for male athlete of the year, while Oldershaw is one of three in the running for coach of the year. The Canadian Sports Awards night will be held March 19 at Winnipeg's Garrick Theatre. "This year's nominations feature an amazing wealth of talent and commitment," said Victor Lachance, executive director of the True Sport Foundation. "Congratulations to all those who were nominated. It is a tribute to the hard work, dedication and the victories of our country's top athletes."
