A single mother, who runs her own marketing and production business, Carol worked four days over the course of those four months. She was at her daughter's side, encouraging her, singing to her, and telling her "she can and will do anything at 110 per cent," a line from a song she made up and sang to Selena. "She's strong, feisty and determined. I knew that if anyone can get through this, she will. I don't think there's any stopping Selena." Carol has since founded a nonprofit organization called Butterflies and Brains, to assist children with acquired brain injuries. She is looking for volunteers and sponsors to help with the foundation, to provide children with things like free swimming, dance and piano lessons, to help kids get their limbs and minds working again. A book, I can and will do anything, and an educational video on acquired brain injuries, are also in the works from Carol's end. "If I can help one child, just one child," says Carol, "I'll be happy. These kids have been to hell and back, and they deserve all the help they can get." Carol also hopes to educate parents on the signs of stroke, which include going limp on one side, collapsing, an intense headache and drowsiness. "I have now met five children that had strokes. Two kids had headaches out of nowhere, and their parents thought it was just a headache. I think parents need to be aware. "My daughter had no signs, until she had pain in her shoulder and then had a stroke at a party." Selena returns to her Oakville home for good in exactly two weeks. "I'm so excited. I keep jumping up," she says. "I'm excited to see all my friends at school, like Brianna. I'm not excited about homework." Her first day back at Sunningdale Public School is March 17. Selena's return follows a two week-long cruise with her mom, "the most deserved vacation ever," Carol says. Her eyes welling up, she added, "For what she has gone through, she's my hero. She's absolutely my hero."
