The eight-year-old has to concentrate on keeping her right arm straight. It wants to bend. Her left eye has trouble staying open, though it's getting better. Her hair is slowly growing back, covering the pink scar that outlines a large patch on her head, left behind after doctors opened her skull to allow her brain to swell. They thought Selena was going to die. Severe brain damage was the best case scenario. Four months ago, Selena went through the unimaginable for an eight year old. She had a stroke. The Grade 3 Sunningdale Public School student has been in hospital and rehab since that Thanksgiving weekend when she suddenly went limp on her right side. That moment when, Selena says, "I thought I wasn't going to make it. "I thought that I died." Despite several MRIs, doctors at McMaster Children's Hospital say they don't know what caused Selena's stroke. They have yet to determine why the young girl went limp and began slurring her words on Oct. 6, 2007. "She was sitting on someone's lap, and all of the sudden she started to cry, and she said, `He hurt me here,' on her shoulder," says Selena's mother, Carol Solis.
