www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 13, 2008 - 3 GO Transit purchases more parking for Bronte station By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Bronte GO Station will receive 250 additional parking spaces before the end of the year. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton made the announcement Bronte GO station commuters have been waiting for at the conclusion of a Friday meeting of the GO Transit Board of Directors. "The board has approved today a negotiated land purchase at the Bronte GO Station," said Burton, who sits on the board. "This will add 2.6 acres of parking land. That should translate into 250 more spots and I would expect them to go into service beginning in June. There'll be a little bit of construction staging where we might start with gravel parking in one part of the property while we pave the rest. Basically we'd construct it in phases to try to get some relief in there as soon as possible." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton posed parking lot was purchased from Marpal Properties Limited for a little more than $2 million. The issue of parking at Bronte GO Station had come to a head in recent months as residents voiced concerns about illegal parking taking place in the laneways as a result of the congestion. Burton noted he had been unable to talk about the coming solution at that time as negotiations were still underway. "I just couldn't talk about it," he said. "But, as you can imagine I'm pretty excited now." Besides the Bronte GO Station announcement, the GO Transit Board also voted to support the development of a mobility hub in Oakville's midtown core. "What we have here is one of those crucial intersect places where transportation comes together," said IBI Group Consultant Joe Berridge, in a presentation to the board. "But, when you look out there right now, what doesn't come together is land use. This is the second most accessible place in the region and it is a mass of parking lots," said Berridge. He is the same expert who has been working with the province's transportation planning agency, Metrolinx, on a proposal to put mobility hubs throughout Halton Region. In places like Oakville, those hubs could be destinations in themselves, a neighbourhood where people work, live, meet and shop. "Midtown has all the components of a mobility hub," Berridge told the GO board Friday at a special meeting in the Oakville council chambers. "It has the best chance of any of the urban growth centres of getting off to a strong start." sale GST& PST * FLOOR We Pay MODEL the Until November 30/06 WHILE SUPPLIES LAST Overstock, floor samples and Free table pad with purchase of all atroom set inventory surplus dining special (Value $349) savings.
