32 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 15, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Timothy's art show opens Saturday Sheridan animation graduate featured in exhibit The work of Sheridan College animation graduate Sayaka Yamanouchi will be featured at an exhibition at Timothy's, at Reynolds and Lakeshore Rd., on Saturday, Feb. 16. The exhibition opens at 7 p.m., and will feature the artist's original paintings. As a girl growing up in Tokyo's Setagaya district, Yamanouchi always knew she wanted to be an artist. She worked as an interpreter and graphic artist, and won awards for her art while still in Japan, including the top award at Misato Hotaru Museum Bookplate Graphic Design Competition in 1999, and second prize for her festival exhibition poster at Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2000. Yamanouchi's fascination with the traditional arts had her dreaming to come to Canada to pursue a career in animation and the film business, studying at Sheridan College. While studying at Sheridan College in the Animation program, Yamanouchi met Cory Carlick and Stephani Soejono, of Skycron, a production company originally founded in Ottawa in 2001, prior to relocating to Toronto. She began doing freelance work for the company, which is sponsoring her exhibition at Timothy's. Loyola's Annual Art Show Feb. 21 Walk into St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School and one thing you will notice is the abundance of artwork in the halls of the high school. From the front foyer to the back second-floor hallways and everything in between, the pieces available for students and visitors alike to see could easily have Loyola disguised as an arts-specific school, or even a gallery. With such amazing work on display every day, it's no surprise that Loyola would have a special event to celebrate the works of its talented student artists. On Feb. 21, Loyola will host its annual Art Show. The school's library will be transformed into a trendy art gallery, complete with a wide range of pieces from each of the past years' art classes. Presented by art teachers Michelle Rego, Liz Tkalec and Daniel Griscti, the art show highlights the work of each art student in each grade at Loyola. The show gives graduating students, a chance to show off everything they've learned in their past four years of art classes at school. The Grade 12 students produce some of the most interesting pieces in the exhibition, as their assignments include a modernized version of a famous painting, and an artistic depiction of a current issue. The Art Show is not only for the work of the senior class. It also gives Loyola's up-and-coming younger artists a chance to show off their work. From the simple clay sculptures and perspective drawings of the ninth graders, to the sketched portraits and colourful pencil crayon designs of the 10th graders and the sculpted masks and mandalas by the Grade 11 class, every grade is well represented at the show. The Art Show takes place on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 6-9 p.m. in the school library. St. Ignatius of Loyola High School is located at 1550 Nottinghill Gate. Admission is free and all are welcome to come and check out the artistic talents of the Loyola art students. You may be able to meet a great future artist. -- Submitted by Victoria Nixon, Grade 11, St. Ignatius of Loyola Plus, with any $45 Clinique purchase receive this matching tote as an added BONUS.
