OAKVILLE BEAVER, Wednesday, February 20, 2008 25 What About School Bus Driving As A Part-Time Job? School bus driving is usually steady permanent parttime work between 7:00am & 9:00am, and then again between the hours of 3:00pm & 5:00pm Monday to Friday, from the beginning of September until the end of June, (in conjunction with the school year). Having the summer off is a favourite feature of this job for golfers. Some school bus drivers say that working with children keeps you young! An applicant must hold a valid Ontario G class licence, and should have a good driving record. A School Bus Company will often provide the necessary training to upgrade to a school bus driver's licence. The process will include undergoing a Ministry of Transportation medical examination, various backround checks including an O.P.P. criminal search, and a training program that will include written and road tests. School bus driving seems particularly well suited for three distinct groups: One such group consists of healthy retirees, who like the idea of continuing to work, while still having time for hobbies and other interests. Having the summer off is a favourite feature of this job for golfers. Some school bus drivers say that working with children keeps you young! Stay-athome moms (or dads) may find this the best way to earn a part-time income because in most cases, they can actually take their pre-schoolers along with them. It's also ideal for parents, because school bus drivers usually have school holidays off. This often becomes a better than a full-time job, taking into consideration there are no day-care costs, little to no transportation costs, no need to spend money on an expensive work wardrobe etc. And most of all, how can you put a price on being able to spend time with your child? The third and growing group that finds school bus driving a perfect part-time job consists of self-employed people with home-based businesses that don't take up all their time. This can include artists, musicians, photographers, and pet-groomers to name but a few. School bus driving is not for everyone. School bus drivers need to enjoy working with children, and the public. They must be patient and caring. They should enjoy driving and working independently. Becoming a school bus driver will mean taking on responsibility for the SAFETY of our children. For the right people this can be the most rewarding part-time job around.
