www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 20, 2008 - 3 Reporter nominated for feature on military reservists Continued from page 1 Excellence (best overall) in the highest circulation category. The Beaver has won this award for the past two years, and a nomination in the top three means it could win the General Excellence category an unprecedented three years in a row. First, second and third place finishers in the Better Newspapers Competition 2007 will be announced at an awards ceremony in Toronto on April 5. Oakville Beaver Managing Editor Rod Jerred was pleased the Beaver was among the top three finalists. "We'll cross our fingers for a three-peat, but just being in the top three in a very competitive circulation class again is an honour and shows the high-quality work David Lea our staff produces on a consistent basis," he said. In addition to the General Excellence nomination, The Oakville Beaver was selected as a finalist in two other Premier Award categories in its circulation class. Oakville Beaver reporter David Lea was nominated in the Best Feature Writing category for his story What you learn here could save your life, in which he joined area reservists on a military manoeuvre in Alberta last August. The Oakville Beaver is also up for the Best Vertical product award for its 150 years, a commemorative publication (Oakville 18572007) printed last May in honour of Oakville's 150th anniversary. In total Metroland West Media Group Ltd., which includes the Beaver, received 24 top-three finalist placings from the Ontario Community Newspaper Association's (OCNA) Better Newspapers Competition 2007. Joining the Beaver as a top three finalist in the General Excellence Award is a Halton sister paper, The Burlington Post, and fellow Metroland newspaper The Mississauga News. Another Halton sister paper of the Beaver -- The Milton Canadian Champion -- is also a General Excellence finalist in its circulation category. Burlington Post photographer Ron Kuzyk, and Milton Canadian Champion photographer Graham Paine, whose work frequently appears in the Oakville Beaver, have been nominated for the Photographer of the Year Award. Oakville Beaver cartoonist Steve Nease is in the running for Cartoonist of the Year for a cartoon, which ran in The ADVERTORIAL Burlington Post, remembering fallen Burlington firefighter Wayne Topping. Halton's Editor-in-Chief Jill Davis was pleased with the number of finalist nominations. "These nominations are a reflection of a lot of hard work by all of our staff," she said. "For the Oakville Beaver to be named as one of the top three newspapers in Ontario is, indeed, an honour." Metroland West is part of Metroland Media Group Ltd., whose parent company is Torstar Corporation. Founded in 1950, the OCNA is a non-profit industry association with offices in Burlington and Toronto. It comprises more than 270 member newspapers located throughout the province.
