The 17-year-old T.A. Blakelock Student is one of 12 award recipients, chosen from a nomination pool of more than 120. The awards are courtesy of the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA), and are designed to recognize outstanding young people, age six to 17, who are performing community service. Each nominee was recently recognized by their local newspapers. "These young people are our leaders of tomorrow. They exemplify the traits we all aspire to and have the ability to inspire and motivate those around them," said OCNA President Rick Shaver. The Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year Awards are run through the 324 member newspapers of OCNA with the support of sponsor TD Canada Trust. Nominations of eligible youth are received each fall through member community newspapers committed to recognizing outstanding youth who are making a difference in their communities. A panel of volunteer judges must unanimously decide on the final recipients. This year nominees from across Ontario were recognized with certificates of recognition by their local community newspaper. The 12 final recipients, including Harmgardt, will be honoured at a ceremony in Toronto this spring. Aside from her multitude of school and community projects, from involvement in the Santa Claus parade to her work as a lifeguard and her leadership in a banners across Canada unity program, one of Harmgardt's biggest accomplishments is being author and publisher of her own book ­ Killbear, Thanks for the Memories, a benefit book for Killbear Provincial Park. Money raised is donated to the park to further park initiatives, such as the building of a shelter. To gather material for her book Harmgardt interviewed Killbear campers in person, convincing them of the importance of her project and getting them to share their Killbear experiences. She's already working on a second book for the park's 50th anniversary.
