18 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 29, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Oakville Irish dancers to compete on world stage Dancers from the Goggin-Carroll School of Irish Dance are headed to the World Championships in Northern Ireland. The group of 23 dancers qualified at the Eastern Canadian Regionals to represent the school in Belfast at the competition in March. The qualifying event, held last November in Niagara Falls, saw more than 700 compete from across Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Taking seven solo wins and six team titles, Goggin-Carroll had their strongest results ever. "We are very pumped up about this year's Worlds and are consistently humbled at how hard our dancers are willing to work to achieve success," says Barb GogginWade, Director of the school. The dancers, age 10 to 20, train up to five times per week. "We are competing against the absolute best in the world and I can't wait," says senior member and last year's finalist Kyla Marsh. To both celebrate and raise funds for the dancers' travel expenses, the Oakville Irish Dance Association is hosting The Claddagh Ball, a Dinner Dance and Silent Auction, on Saturday at Le Dome in Oakville. In the spirit of the Claddagh (an Irish symbol of friendship, loyalty and love) the dancers will perform during the gala event. Organizers are seeking donations and/or sponsorship from the community. The dancers will be very visible in their communities over the St Patrick's Day weekend. For information email barb@goggin-carroll.com or visit www.goggin-carroll.com.
