30 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 1, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com New partnership set to heal wounds Smith & Nephew and Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) have launched a partnership that will provide HHS with the expertise and educational support to establish a wound care program across its three hospitals, including Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). Smith & Nephew is a world-wide leader in advanced wound management products. Stephanie Chadwick, HHS' new Wound Care Specialist, hired as part of HHS' Patient Safety Initiative, and Nabila Lowe, OTMH Medical Program Leader, instrumental in the partnership, have been working with Smith & Nephew on best practices on the prevention of pressure ulcers and wound care. "While patients come in with a wide-range of wounds, one of the most common and persistent type of wounds we encounter in a hospital setting are pressure ulcers, otherwise known as bedsores," said Chadwick. "Pressure ulcers are commonly formed by staying in one position for too long, in areas of the body where the bone is close to the skin, such as the ankles and the heels. Patients most at risk for developing wounds are those who are elderly, bedridden, have mobility issues or other underlying medical conditions like diabetes, circulatory problems or poor nutrition. "Chronic wounds like pressure ulcers are extremely painful, very persistent and can be quite challenging to heal," said Lowe. Smith & Nephew has delivered an introductory Skin and Wound Care workshop to more than 400 HHS nurses. The company is also making available to HHS staff a comprehensive e-learning program on Advanced Wound Management, which nurses can access electronically online at their convenience. The educational program promotes the use of a holistic approach one which reviews the patient's history, medication, nutrition, mobility and activity level. It is vital to understand how and why a patient acquired a wound and to address all the contributing factors in order to facilitate healing. At HHS, nurses are learning that a multi-disciplinary team strategy -- which draws on the expertise and assistance of various healthcare professionals, such as dieticians, physiotherapists, and pain specialists -- is the most effective way of providing comprehensive, wound care. At HHS, nurses are also starting to use the Braden Scale Assessment tool to identify patients at risk of developing wounds so they can intervene and take proactive steps -- like moving or turning patients on a regular basis -- to help preempt the occurrence of wounds, when possible. "We are thrilled to work with Halton Healthcare Services and its nurses to help facilitate the healing process and improve the lives of patients with serious wounds," noted Don Desjardins, National Strategic Partnerships Manager Ontario, Smith & Nephew. "Smith and Nephew's approach echoes the same values as those of Halton Healthcare Services regarding patient focused-care, broad base thinking and evidencebased practice," said John Oliver, HHS President and CEO. "This partnership will provide our nurses with the products, tools and the educational support to provide a higher quality of patient care." www.insception.com For more information We're putting life-saving AED's in more public places in your community.
