Hewitt says the "manor homes" he's proposing will be more in keeping with the original mansion Ryrie built on the lot a 15,000 16,000-squarefoot home. "The buildings we do, we want them to feel like the buildings first built on the property. The design will be rooted in the past. The materials and the forms and the ideas will come from the buildings that were here," he said. "It will look like it evolved on this site." The two-and-a-half storey homes will house up to three flats apiece, with the smallest at about 3,000 square feet. Hewitt says they'll start at about $3 million per flat, which they're marketing as "private estates." "They're very much like private homes, not three homes in one private mansion," said Hewitt. "This will create essentially a different kind of housing option in southeast Oakville." Each flat will have two or three private parking spaces, and a private elevator from the garage level will take residents to their flats. "All of the units can be customized by the buyer. If somebody wants three bedrooms, not two, they want a gym and a spa, a pool, that can all be customized," said Hewitt. Wine cellars and outdoor kitchens as well as indoor kitchens, will also be featured in each flat. Hewitt says eight or nine people have already shown interest in purchasing one of the homes, including neighbours invited to a meeting he held recently to inform them of his plans. "The people that have been interested are people that live in southeast Oakville, that have the same sort of lifestyle of a 4-6,000-square-foot home, but they want to live in a managed property," he said. Edgemere Estate would house "almost hotellevel services," says Hewitt. A concierge, laundry services, maintenance of walkways and grounds would be on site. Pending approval of zoning and building applications, construction will begin either late this year or by the spring of 2009. Hewitt says the earliest people would be living there would be late 2010. He first took a look at Edgemere Estate last April, just after it went on the market. Hewitt says there was no one person willing to buy the estate. "There were a number of developers looking at the property, because what you could do, if you wanted, is subdivide the property into 17 lots," he said. "This is what was going to happen," he added, pointing to a plan showing those 17 homes. "I was quite bothered by the idea of somebody plowing a road through the property, getting rid of most of the trees, the heritage buildings," he said. "You lose the sense of what the property was like. "What we're proposing is a way to keep the estate intact."
