www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 5, 2008 - 35 Local high school hockey teams denied Yesterday (Tuesday) was a rough day for Oakville high school hockey teams with championship aspirations. The T.A. Blakelock Tigers girls' squad and Abbey Park Eagles boys' team were both eliminated from Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament contention with losses, while the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers fell in the opener of their girls' hockey Tier 2 twogame Halton final against the Aldershot Lions. Halton Tier 1 champion Blakelock dropped a 4-2 decision to the St. Jean de Brebeuf Braves in a Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) challenge game at Oakville Arena. If victorious, the Tigers would have advanced to tomorrow's GHAC championship game and would have been guaranteed a berth in the OFSAA championships. Morgan Sims and Michelle Saunders scored in a losing cause for Blakelock. Alex Saunders, Genevieve Panabaker and Hayleigh Cudmore drew assists. Abbey Park needed a victory in Game 2 of its Halton semifinal series with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Burlington, following a 5-1 loss in the series opener last week. The Eagles trailed Game 2 1-0 going into the third period before Chris McIvor scored to tie the game, but Notre Dame's James Carreiro netted the game-winner only nine seconds later as the Irish held on for a 2-1 win. Tyler Schlonies had the lone Abbey Park goal in Game 1. Notre Dame will face Nelson in the Halton final today. Iroquois Ridge fell 5-1 to the Aldershot Lions in Burlington. Darcy Breakey scored for the Trailblazers with 10 seconds left in the second period, making the score 3-1, but Aldershot added two more goals early in the final period. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at Mainway Arena in Burlington, beginning at 3 p.m. The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders girls' team was in action yesterday in an OFSAA AA semifinal game against the Acton Bearcats. Results from that game were unavailable at press time. If the Raiders won, they would face the Lester B. Pearson Patriots today in Burlington for the right to go to OFSAA. Atom B Hornets advance to division semis The Oakville BMO Financial Group atom B Hornets have advanced to the semifinals of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League East Division playoffs after defeating the Etobicoke Dolphins in back-to-back- games last weekend. In the first game Friday, played at Joshua Creek, the tight-checking Dolphins kept the Hornets from mounting much offence. Etobicoke took a 1-0 lead in the second period as a Hornets' miscue gave the visitors clear passage in on Hornets' goalie Lia Widell. The Hornets were unable to get the equalizer until early in the third when left winger Kai Palo cashed in from the slot after receiving a beautiful pass on the tape from right winger MacKenzie Sutherland. The Hornets suddenly found their game and exploded for four more goals before the buzzer sounded. Centre Christina Scanlon backhanded the go-ahead goal and then Maddie Sisokin clinched the victory with a pretty solo effort. The Davison twins, Sydney and Taylor, added insurance markers in the 5-1 win. The following day at Centennial Park arena in Etobicoke, the Hornets struck early with a goal by hustling centre Tegan Duncan. Oakville kept the Dolphins in close check until Sydney Davison sealed the victory early in the third when she broke in alone on the Dolphins goal. Widell was solid in one of her busiest games this season, turning away all 21 shots she faced for the well-earned 2-0 shutout. The Hornets, coached by Brian Morrow, next face the Mississauga Chiefs.
